The Future of Nursing and School Nursing

Question: How will increasing your level of education affect how you compete in the current job market? How will increasing your level of education affect your role in the future of nursing? Answer: Healthcare The Institute of Medicine (IOM) released their landmark report in 2010, which is known as The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. The landmark report addresses the key roles of the nurses in the context of rapidly changing health care landscape. There are approximately 3 million registered nurses in the U.S, who work day and night in different medical settings, such as public health centers, hospitals, homes as well as in schools (Cowell, 2012). There are many recommendations provided in the report presented by the IOM in order to establish a better nursing management. The recommendation 4 emphasizes, Increase the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80% by 2020. This seemed to be beneficial since the government is giving stress to increase the number of registered and trained nurse in the health care system. The government targeted to increase the number of trained nurses up to 80% by 2020 (Hassmiller Goodman, 2011). This is helpful for the new generation of younger people who are thinking to select nursing profession as their career. It is an opportunity for the new generation nurses to get more options in their working field. In recommendation 5, the IOM stated, double the number of nurses with a doctorate by 2020. This recommendation can be considered an opportunity in order to enhance the qualification of the present nurses who do not posses doctorate (Wilson et al., 2012). The doctorate is important for the nurses who do not have proper qualification for their job. Proper implementation of this recommendation is helpful to increase the professional degree of the nurses as well as increasing the level of quality care. The Recommendation 6 stated, Ensure that nurses engage in lifelong learning. This is a very important and crucial recommendation, which have a direct impact on the nursing profession. The nursing profession is a vast field, and the nurses need to have a vast knowledge to take care of different types of patients (Woods, 2013). From the aspect of a student of nursing graduation, it is important to increase the qualification to get more opportunities in the nursing field. The nursing field now offers a better opportunity to the new nurses as the government of the U.S. targets to increase the number of nurses with baccalaureate degree up to 80%. Therefore, the young nurses have an opportunity to grab the offer provided by the government in order to increase the qualification. The increasing level of education may have a direct effect on the nurse's role in the context of future nursing. The increasing level of education, in turn, will be helpful to enrich nursing knowledge. With a vast field of nursing knowledge, it will be helpful to provide best quality care to different types of patients. References Cowell, J. M. (2012).
